Medicare Supplement 1st Quarter 2020 Results

Last month CSG Actuarial reported the 1st quarter 2020 Medicare Supplement enrollment results for United Healthcare.  We now have updates from other market leaders Anthem, CVS Health, and Humana, summarized below. 

Anthem Medicare Supplement Enrollment Increases 9,000 in 1st Quarter 2020

Anthem, Inc. released 1st quarter 2020 financials on April 29th, adding 9,000 Medicare Supplement lives in the 1st quarter and 47,000 Medicare Supplement lives in the past 12 months.  The Anthem enrollment table below features Medicare Supplement policy in-force counts of 914,000 as of 3/31/2020.  The enrollment increase of 47,000 in the past year is a 5.4% increase over the in-force lives at 1st quarter 2019.  CSG Actuarial projects Anthem’s Medicare Supplement sales at 4th in the overall market over the past 12 months.

CVS Health Medicare Supplement Enrollment Increases 32,000 in 1st Quarter 2020

For 1st quarter 2020, CVS Health reported Medicare Supplement member in-force counts of 913,000, up 32,000 from 4th quarter 2019 and 109,000 over the past 12 months.  The 32,000 increase in membership during 1st quarter 2020 was 78% higher than the membership growth in 1st quarter 2019.  The 109,000 increase in membership in the past 12 months was 95% higher than the membership growth in the previous 12 months.  The table below shows CVS Health/Aetna’s Medicare Supplement enrollment counts by quarter since 4th quarter 2011 and annual increase in Medicare Supplement enrollment counts by quarter since 4th quarter 2012.  CSG Actuarial projects CVS Health’s Medicare Supplement sales at 3rd in the overall market over the past 12 months.

Humana Medicare Supplement Enrollment Increases 15,600 in 1st Quarter 2020

Humana reported 1st quarter 2020 Medicare Supplement lives of 314,000, a 5.2% increase over 4th quarter 2019 and a 17.5% increase over 1st quarter 2019.  Membership in the past 12 months grew by 46,700, 63% higher than the membership growth in the previous 12 months.  The table below shows Humana’s Medicare Supplement enrollment counts by quarter since 1st quarter 2012.  Humana also reported 1st quarter 2020 Medicare Supplement premiums of $163 million, up 6% from 4th quarter 2019.  Based on estimates from CSG Actuarial, Humana’s sales in ranked 6th in the market in the past 12 months.
